When groups that were historically marginalized begin to gain rights and public voice, those who lived at the center of the story often describe it as an attack. They talk about “losing their country” or “their way of life” when what is actually being lost is the exclusive privilege to define whose stories count. Equality does not silence anyone. It simply makes room for others to speak at the same volume. That can be disorienting if you are used to having the microphone by default, but discomfo
