Also preserved in the London’s Roman amphitheatre are some of the timber drains, which would have been buried below the arena floor to take away excess water. Along the line of the drain is a box silt trap to stop the drains clogging up.The drain routes are marked in the floor in stainless steel. Marked in brass at the end of the entrance way, is the site where a large timber threshold was found.This would once have supported a gateway, for controlling the animals entering the arena. #ruins #rom

Buried beneath the fantastic Guildhall Art Gallery, you’ll find the 2,000-year-old remains of London’s only Roman amphitheatre. During an archaeological dig in 1988, it was found that the capital's only Roman amphitheatre was located in Guildhall Yard. The surviving remains include a stretch of the stone entrance tunnel, east gate, and arena walls.
