This Gopher Tortoise (23-1839) was discovered by Fort Lauderdale residents because his shell had been painted with bright colors. Fortunately, he was in good health otherwise. Because tortoises and other turtle species absorb vitamins via the sun’s UV rays, paint on their shell can severely compromise their health and can also prevent them from camouflaging from predators. Upon initial exam, staff noted the tortoise had puncture wounds in its shell and was missing a piece of its carapace (upper shell).
