In advanced HIV, a weakened immune system (low CD4 count) allows opportunistic infections (OIs) like TB, PCP pneumonia, CMV, cryptococcal meningitis, and candidiasis to thrive. These infections arise because the body can’t fight pathogens it would normally control. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) restores immune function, reducing viral load and increasing CD4 counts, preventing OIs. Prophylactic antibiotics (e.g., cotrimoxazole) further prevent infections in severely immunocompromised patients. #h
