Raupo provides an important refuge habitat for bittern fledglings and it is important to keep a good water level and food source around the raupo so that the bittern fledglings do not need to wander into more open areas where they are more vulnerable. On October 28, American Bittern #24-4268 was admitted from Norfolk, after colliding with a window at a construction site. The bird had a broken femur and anemia, and our veterinary team not only performed surgery to pin the fractured bone, but they even orchestrated a blood transfusion using blood from a Great Horned Owl donor!
