The region, known as the copper belt of Africa, has been a major copper mining area for over 100 years. In the 1950s, it was the world’s top copper producer. Today, it still provides more than 10% of the world’s copper, mainly from ancient sedimentary deposits. Copper mining is a key part of the economies of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Katanga region, supporting jobs and infrastructure. The copper belt stretches 450km from Luanshya in northwest Zambia to Katanga in Congo. | Zed
