Aloha Oe is a Hawaiian farewell song written by Queen Lili’uokalani in 1878. Queen Liliʻuokalani wrote Aloha ʻOe after witnessing an emotional farewell between a Hawaiian colonel and a young woman at Maunawili Ranch on the island of Oʻahu. Moved by the tender goodbye, she was inspired to write a song capturing the feeling of parting with a loved one. After Queen Liliʻuokalani was overthrown in 1893, Aloha ʻOe took on deeper political meaning—seen by many as a lament for the loss of the Hawaiian
