I think scribing is a skill anyone should learn and can benefit from whether you’re in the trades or a DIYer. Years ago before I was in construction, the “logical” thing for me to do in this situation was to make 2 marks at the correct measurement, find a straight edge and connect the 2 marks with the straight edge.
