This was my guitar project I called “QUILTY” I believe quilted maple is a result of seismic activity. If we look at where the quilted maple is found primarily, it is exactly where most all seismic activity occurs on the West Coast. Recently, some owners of wood lots and acreage that have a lot of quilted maple found some clay that has the same pattern as quilted.
